In 1992 a small group of guys gathered to discuss organizing a group of gay men in Atlanta who shared the common love of outdoor activities. The group was originally called the Outdoor Atlanta Sports Club but later the name was changed to Wilderness Network of Georgia (WNG). For over thirty years we have organized hundreds of trips all over the Southeast, throughout the country and even in other counties. We are governed by a set of bylaws and a group of volunteer board members that are responsible for keeping the club organized. They meet regularly to maintain our corporation status, organize activities like our quarterly potluck meetups, and other activities we are involved in like the Atlanta Pride celebration.
My name is Pete and one day Ralph invited me as guest to my 1 st WNG Potluck in the summer of 2014. I immediately joined WNG July 2014 and did my 1st BeltLine CleanUp the next week and met Jonny and Kevin. Well by early the next month Doug was leading a trip canoeing down the Flint River I bravely went on and I was hooked. I knew then this was my new group of forever friends and buddies!
Fast forward and I find myself your 2023/2024 WNG President! I could not be more proud and humbled to serve the club that has given me so much. This club and group of guys has changed my life for the better. I’ve lived a lifetime of experiences from swimming with the Manatees in Crystal River, FL. Waking up under a tree on the deserted side of Cumberland Island to the sight of 3 stallion wild horse snorting at me only 15 feet away! And bracing with the guys in our tents on the edge of the Everglades overlooking the end of the US out over the Caribbean to a magnificent sand and rainstorm hoping we would not be swept out to sea… and loving every minute of it bonding with each other. Oh yes, also watching Kerry take on a large hungry racoon, pitch dark, in the woods, “skins only” (because real men fight bare naked in the wild…lol).
Well, there will be more stories to tell and I look forward to seeing all you guys on the trail. And thanks for not making fun of me on the 1st camping trip when I faked it trying to put up my $25 Target tent. – Travel well and always bring duct tape. My Dad could fix any thing with that stuff!
– Sincerely - Pete
As a way to give back, in April of 2014, WNG adopted a section of the Atlanta Beltline along the Eastside Trail. We meet the 2nd Saturday of every month to pick up liter, report maintenance concerns, vandalism, or suspicious activities. The events are posted on meetup.com
